How Our Local Tech Partnership Enhances Our Memory Care

As new technologies emerge, we see industries evolving and adapting their businesses to improve customer experiences and outcomes. 

Living in Waterloo has it's benefits as the fastest growing technology hub in Canada. In 2019, we were pleased to partner with Emmetros, a Waterloo-based Startup to explore their new platform, MemorySparx Connect. Their secure portal (accessed on a tablet, computer or smartphone) allows family members to share important information with the care team about their loved one’s interests and preferences.

When speaking to team members working at Emmetros (Renee Gibbons & Dominique Williams) the passion this company has for improving people’s lives is clear.

“This application is about so much more than a person’s physical care; it addresses the most important aspects of taking care of someone. It focuses on the social and emotional aspects first, what matters to that individual.” Our goal in incorporating Memorysparx connect platform is to improve the support our residents living in Memory Care receive. This personal information deepens our understanding of the interests, experiences, and preferences that matter most to each resident. It facilitates connections, focuses on their interests & hobbies, and truly provides a more holistic outcome for each individual’s well-being.

Mandy Holmes (in the photo above), leads our therapeutic programs on Parkview Suites Memory Care, and has championed this exciting initiative because she’s seen the benefits firsthand.  Mandy explains, “the app gives our team and families an easy way to collaborate and helps our staff tailor their care to each resident.  Families feel involved and residents experience improved emotional and social outcomes.”  Mandy uses the tool for Reminiscence Therapy to foster meaningful conversations. She explains, “I share family photos with the resident which calms them and puts a smile on their face”.

We believe using technology fosters collaborative communication and innovation in what we do. As new exciting technologies emerge, we will continue to integrate new exciting tools into our community.
